"Eye Rolling"
Hmmmmmmm Eye Rolling
I often wonder about what people are thinking when they roll their eyes at someone,
don't you?
How does it make you feel if you are the Rollee? How are you truly feeling when you are the Roller?
Okay, let's think about it. Sometimes you catch someone out of the corner of your eyes when they are right in the middle of rolling their eyes about something you just might have said that to you was very accurate in your statements and because you see them doing this you start to get defensive and think that maybe what you said wasn't fact or maybe they know so much better and they are criticizing your facts because they just don't believe them, or maybe they just think you don't know what you are talking about. Hmmmmmm
Or maybe you catch someone blatantly rolling their eyes while you are talking to them because they are thinking something that you just did was horrifically stupid. Hmmmmm
Or maybe you catch someone rolling their eyes again only because the person you are talking to keeps looking at the person that is to the side of you or behind you making facial expressions and rolling their eyes while doing it. Hmmmmm
Or maybe you see three people from across the room that are all talking in a group and suddenly you see one of them roll their eyes and make a huge movement of head and body because of something one of the people he/she was just talking to said something so outrageous that they just couldn't believe that he/she said that! Hmmmmm
Then there are those times when you are in front of a crowd of people making a speech or talking in front of the class or maybe just talking to a bunch of your peers and being very serious and full of intelect (or so you think) and you see that someone special you know in the crowd making gestures with their eyes and hands and head that just make you think OMG what did I say that is going to humiliate me for the rest of my life? Hmmmmmm
So when you think about adult eye rollers, all I can think is that they are trying to find you (the rollee) a little less perfect, a little less intelligent, a little more stupid and therefore, Superior. Or maybe not! Maybe it's just something they learned from their parents or something they've been doing since they were teenagers.
It seems to be that just these little eye
gestures can mean a lot to a lot of different people. It can mean; disapproval, disappointment, embarrassment, shame, Silly, crazy, OMG do I have to listen to this again?, and I'm sure a host of other things that only the Rollee feels at the time the Roller is doing it to them.
Eye-rolling is a piece of cake to deal with. Like all annoying behaviors, it is meant to accomplish two things: It’s a little rebellious, and is also somewhat “power-challenging.” In either case, ignoring it is the perfect solution. Many parents feel that when kids roll their eyes, they’re being disrespectful or somehow challenging their authority. I say, “So what?” If you acknowledge eye-rolling and argue about it, you’re giving your child power he didn’t earn by being productive. The simple answer? Don’t acknowledge it. I guarantee you that if you ignore eye-rolling it will either go away or become comical to you. I suggest you say what you have to say to your kids, and then don’t wait for the eye-rolling. If you’re in a conversation where eyes are being rolled, just keep focusing on what you want to communicate. Like many annoying behaviors, it’s harmless, and the best way to deal with harmless, annoying behaviors is to ignore them.
So as for me, I think I'll just start rolling my eyes back at all those people in my life that roll their eyes at me, and around me, because I'm confident in what I say and I believe in what I say and if I let them get the better of me, then I'm the one who has lost.
He who angers you, conquers you.
So go ahead and roll your eyes you eye rollers, because one day someone is going to roll them back and you and you will suddenly start saying, "Why, why"?, or What? what" because it seems to be a pretty universal body language of sorts.
